In 2012, Nigerian architect Tosin Oshinowo became the founder and principal architect of Lagos practice cmDesign Atelier. She is known for her socially responsible approaches to architecture, design, and urbanism. A striking example of that is Rebuilding Ngarannam, a project in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Currently in progress, this initiative is building an entirely new community in northern Nigeria for a village displaced by the terrorist group Boko Haram. The future for African designers looks positive, also due to initiatives such as Africa by Design, created in 2017 by featured designer Chrissa Amuah. Working with 35 designers from seven countries, it promotes exhibitions and commercial networks for creative professionals.

Their vibrant colors, intricate designs, and cultural significance have transcended borders and gained recognition beyond the African continent. Today, African art patterns are celebrated in museums, galleries, and exhibitions, showcasing the talent, creativity, and artistry of African artisans. Moreover, they have influenced contemporary design, fashion, and visual arts, as artists and designers draw inspiration from the mesmerizing allure of African patterns.

Used in a variety of applications from clothing to home décor, the fabrics often carry messages of power, social change, and cultural heritage. The Ndebele people of South Africa are also known for their colourful house painting and beadwork. Their clothing designs use vibrant geometric patterns to convey information about a person’s age, marital status, and social roles. Despite their diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, African designers draw inspiration from their roots and utilize traditional materials, motifs, and techniques in their creations. Their work reflects a deep respect for African heritage while also pushing the boundaries of contemporary design.

Another exciting development in contemporary Kente cloth weaving is the incorporation of new materials and techniques. While traditionally Kente cloth was woven using silk or cotton, modern weavers are experimenting with a wide range of materials, including synthetic fibers and even recycled materials. This not only adds a new dimension to the art form but also allows for more sustainable and eco-friendly practices. In addition to new patterns, contemporary weavers are also exploring new color combinations in their designs.

Jungle Cruise Movie Trailer & Disney+ Disney

the jungle cruise movie

” she snarls – but by locating a seam of sadness in her character’s bitchery. Her Emily stood for a generation of hungrily interning young women in the big city, willing to accept any amount of exploitation for a step up the ladder. She was witty and poignant enough to land Bafta and Golden Globe nominations, along with the more long-term reward of enduring pop-culture quotability. Regardless of the direction "Jungle Cruise 2" goes in, viewers can look forward to another family-friendly adventure that puts the film's heroes in a perilous situation.

MacGregor Drives The Boat

While his status for the sequel remains unconfirmed, British comedian Jack Whitehall could return as MacGregor, Lily's younger brother who — often against his better judgment — helps his sibling on her dangerous quests. Whitehall is a big name in the U.K, but "Jungle Cruise 2" is an ideal vehicle for continuing to solidify his presence in Hollywood. In 2017, with Johnson officially onboard to star in the film, "Jungle Cruise" began to set up the rest of its creative team — both in front of and behind the camera. Johnson, as he has in many of his recent blockbusters, took a rather active role in the process, because he's also serving as one of the project's producers. In the spring of 2017 the film began searching for a director, and Johnson expressed a preference for "Wonder Woman" helmer Patty Jenkins. Jenkins ultimately stayed at Warner Bros. to direct a "Wonder Woman" sequel, and by the summer of 2017 Jaume Collet-Serra was revealed as the director after passing on the opportunity to direct a "Suicide Squad" sequel.

Here's everything you need to know before "Jungle Cruise" hits theaters. At the time of this writing, a release date for "Jungle Cruise 2" has yet to be confirmed. The movie is in the very early stages of the pre-production process, so viewers will just have to be patient for now.

The most pleasant surprise is that director Jaume Collet-Serra ("The Shallows") and a credited team of five, count 'em, writers have largely jettisoned the ride's mid-century American colonial snarkiness and casual racism (a tradition only recently eliminated). Following a year of post-production and a year of further delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jungle Cruise was finally released in the United States on July 30, 2021, simultaneously in theaters and digitally via Disney+ Premier Access. The film received mixed reviews and grossed $221 million worldwide against a production budget of $200 million. It also made $66 million over its first 30 days on Premier Access.[6][7] A sequel is in development, with Johnson and Blunt set to reprise their roles.

He helped search for the Tears to save Aguirre's daughter but sided with the tribe against Aguirre's brutality. After years of endless fighting, Frank trapped his vengeful comrades in the cave away from the river, petrifying them. Failing to find the Tree, Frank remained tied to the river, becoming a tour guide and building a village.

Paul Giamatti plays a gold-toothed, sunburned, cartoonishly “Italian” harbor master who delights at keeping Frank in debt. Edgar Ramirez is creepy and scary as a conquistador whose curse from centuries ago has trapped him in the jungle. Jesse Plemons plays the main baddie, Prince Joachim, who wants to filch the power of the petals for the Kaiser back in Germany (he's Belloq to the stars' Indy and Marion, trying to swipe the Ark). Unsurprisingly, given his track record, Plemons steals the film right out from under its leads. According to Digital Spy, the sequel could feature a fish-out-of-water story for Frank now that he's been brought out of the jungle and forced to navigate 1920s London.

Trader Sam And Lily Walk In The Jungle

the jungle cruise movie

Of course, the "Jungle Cruise" ride has a wealth of interesting characters, and the sequel could feature more of them. With that in mind, expect some fresh faces to appear in "Jungle Cruise 2." While no other casting announcements have been made official at the time of this writing, the first movie did leave the door open to some interesting possibilities. Given that Frank has a history with Aguirre, Édgar Ramírez might be brought back as the ghostly serpentine villain. While the bad guy was turned to stone at the end of the first "Jungle Cruise," Aguirre's backstory with Frank has only been explored briefly, and the film gave us the impression that the former allies have some unfinished business with each other.

She in turn gave the film the kind of warm human gumption that its male leads, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, didn’t provide. It’s 20 years since we first saw Blunt on the big screen, following some TV appearances. Offbeat Londoner Natalie Press had the larger role as the gawky, besotted Yorkshire lass, cueing a career of character parts that gradually tapered off. As a callous seductress fresh out of boarding school, Blunt, with her cut-glass delivery and magazine-cover features, was fast-tracked to leading-lady status. The report quickly generated controversy, not because Disney would feature an openly gay character in the film, but because of how the character would reportedly be portrayed.

Casting

As with Johnny Depp and the first "Pirates" film, one of the keys to the project's success is picking a star to frame the film around, and then filling out a compelling ensemble. In the pantheon of Disney movies based on Disney theme park rides, "Jungle Cruise" is pretty good—leagues better than dreck like "Haunted Mansion," though not quite as satisfying as the original "Pirates of the Caribbean." But it was 2012’s Looper that pointed a clear way forward for the actor, hitherto not an obvious fit for a high-octane action film. Rian Johnson’s ingeniously knotted sci-fi thriller cast her effectively against type as a hard-bitten Kansas farmer and single mother who can wield a shotgun with the best of them.

Though it keeps the focus on Blunt and Johnson, often in pursuit of or being pursued by some nasty business, supernatural or otherwise, it does provide a few more glimpses of the actual cruise in question. There's even some Jesse Plemons action in what looks to be a German U-Boat. With the release date right around the corner, this is likely the final glimpse of the project before game time, so go ahead and fire it up. Derivative of films that were themselves highly derivative, "Jungle Cruise" has the look and feel of a paycheck gig for all involved, but everyone seems to be having a great time, including the filmmakers. The big trick with that was the art direct-ability of the boat, the speed of which you went through the rapids and what kind of splashes it made.

Any minor quibbles are outshone by the star power wattage generated by Johnson and Blunt. If Johnson is still the Most Electrifying Man In Entertainment, then Emily Blunt is a superconductor. In theaters and on Disney+ for a premium charge starting Friday, July 30th.

The next few years saw Blunt reaching for household-name status while spreading her bets career-wise across a range of films, from horror to romcom. I am quite happy that, despite it being a new Disney production, there’s really not much in terms of woke bullshit preaching in there. JUNGLE CRUISE (the movie) was based on "Jungle Cruise", a Disneyland ride, so I wasn't expecting much, and was definitely pleasantly surprised.

cruise ship nyc

Manhattan cruises often range from 15+ nights providing cruisers with a variety of different entertainment and dining options. How much do cruises from Manhattan cost?

Or check out the iconic 77-story Chrysler Building, a true art deco masterpiece. And be sure to stop by the Flatiron Building, one of the first steel-frame skyscrapers in the world. Hands down, the best way to see New York City is with a walking tour. And head to Chelsea Market to sample some of the city’s amazing cuisine or hit up one of the many mouthwatering food tours. The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal at Red Hook opened in April 2006 on the site of a former container terminal, south of Brooklyn Heights and not far from the entrance to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. It has one berth and is used mainly by Cunard's Queen Mary 2 and Princess Cruises.

Cape Liberty (New York) Shore Excursions

Richmondtown also features a collection of New York City buildings, some as old as 300 years. Cunard's 2,691-passenger Queen Mary 2 regularly plies the Atlantic Ocean between New York City and Southampton, England. This "crossing" voyage is a throwback of sorts to the "Golden Age of Cruising," when movie stars and political leaders traveled via liner across the ocean.

Night Canada & New England - New YorkDetails

Or venture 104 floors up to the One World Observatory in the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. If you love history and architecture, you’ll get your fix of both at Grand Central Terminal. Marvel at the beaux-art landmark — and recreate your favorite movie scene filmed at the famed location.

Spend two full nights in Bermuda and several days at sea—plenty of time to enjoy everything the Celebrity Eclipse has to offer. Play basketball, go shopping or spend your time at the casino, pools or spa. Or eat and drink your way across more than a dozen bars and restaurants, including an interactive Le Petit Chef dining experience. These seven-night roundtrip sailings depart from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, making it especially easy to combine a visit to the Statue of Liberty with your cruise.

In March 2006, some passenger terminals were transferred (as management) to DP World (Dubai-based corporation). The company "Port Authority of New York and New Jersey" was established in 1921 to manage all facilities and services within the combined NY-NJ harbor area. The company also controls all vehicular and rapid-transit systems connecting New York and New Jersey, several airports, as well as real estate developments. During winter are popular southbound itineraries – to the Caribbean and Bahamas. During summer are operated mainly roundtrips to Bermuda as well as Transatlantic crossings (USA-UK/Southampton).

New York (NYC Manhattan-Brooklyn)

Or you can arrive a day or two early to enjoy the sights and activities of New York City. Catch a Broadway show, see the Statue of Liberty or explore The Metropolitan Museum of Art before setting sail. When it's time to board, book a car service or taxi to Cape Liberty, about 20 minutes away from the Holland Tunnel (without traffic), and get ready for your getaway. For ultra-luxury afloat, consider one of Silversea Cruises' 11-night sailings from New York City to Montreal aboard Silver Shadow.

It's also a great jumping-off point for cruises to the Caribbean, The Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, New England and even transatlantic crossings to Europe. With some 20,000 sit-down restaurants, this is a foodie’s paradise. Many iconic dishes have been rubber-stamped by New York— pizza, bagels, hot dogs and cheesecake included. Sightseeing in Manhattan excites and amazes like nowhere else— and every neighborhood presents a fascinating, unique personality. Tour Rockefeller Center and catch a show at Radio City Music Hall. New York cruises allow you to experience it all— by tour bus, subway, or on foot.

It's hard to imagine anything better than enjoying your first transatlantic cruise onboard the spectacular Anthem of the Seas®. There's the luxury of time and space as you cross the sea, plus stops in four European countries. Buses operate 24/7, though service is less frequent late at night. Some buses are marked "Limited" which means they will only stop at major cross streets (i.e., 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd) rather than every two or three blocks.

Taxis are readily available at all airports, and fares are either fixed or metered, not including tolls. From La Guardia, the metered fare will run about $25, plus toll. The fixed fare from Newark's airport ranges from $35 to $40, depending on final destinations. A Manhattan yellow taxi to Newark's airport is a metered fare (about $45), plus $15, plus tolls both ways. Taxi fares to Cape Liberty Cruise Port are about $35 from Newark Airport; $65 from JFK, plus tolls; and $70 from La Guardia, plus tolls. The Brooklyn Cruise Terminal is 20 miles from JFK and will cost you about $45 in taxi fare or, from LGA, about $30 for the 12-mile trip.

In autumn are offered "Fall Foliage" cruises to Canada and New England USA. Considered the cultural capital of the U.S., New York City has close to one hundred must-see museums to choose from. Explore interactive exhibits from land to sea and even outer space at the American Museum of Natural History. And you can’t leave NYC without visiting the MET to take in over 5,000 years of art on display. Small coastal vessels, including those of American Cruise Lines, dock at the Chelsea Recreational Piers on the Hudson River, near streets in the West 20's. MetroCards are sold at subway stations, many newsstands and some stores.

The Downtown Connection offers a free hop-on, hop-off bus service between South Street Seaport and northern Battery Park City. Celebrity Cruises offers two seven-night Bermuda sailings from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, New Jersey, aboard Celebrity Eclipse or Celebrity Silhouette, both in the line's Solstice Class of ships. Port call excursions on the New York-to-Reykjavik itinerary include a visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia's Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, home to the world's largest collection of wooden artifacts from the Titanic. In Nuuk, Greenland, passengers can visit a local family and learn about their culture and customs. Stroll through botanical gardens or check out the world's northernmost 18-hole golf course in Akureyri, Iceland. Central Park is one of the largest parks in a metropolitan area.

Though New York is incredibly safe for a large city, use the same good judgment you would in any other port of call to minimize unwanted attention as a tourist. Keep wallets concealed; zip up purses, and hold them near to your body, particularly in crowded areas; and don't flaunt expensive jewelry, cameras or cash. If you are staying in town before or after your cruise, stick to main streets after dark, and hop in a cab if you don't know where you're headed.

Your experience during the crossing is just as important as your days spent in Europe. While the sun is out, head for the Solarium pool, an indoor, adults-only oasis, or the Vitality℠ Spa for a rejuvenating facial or tension-taming massage. At night, enjoy shows at the Royal Theater, rock cover bands in Music Hall and explore your favorite global cuisines in the main dining room or one of the ship's seven specialty restaurants. If you plan to fly in before your cruise, Newark Liberty International Airport is just nine miles away. You can arrange to be met by a Royal Caribbean representative there and whisked off to your ship.

Amtrak offers service to New York City along the Northeast Corridor from Boston, Providence, Hartford, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. From Penn Station, you'll need to take a taxi to get to the Manhattan port. For last-minute essentials, like toiletries, soda and water, you'll need to head east to the area around 9th Avenue. There are additional options for a quick bite if you walk south along 10th and 9th avenues.

Subway entrances are marked by an illuminated Metropolitan Transit Authority (M.T.A.) lamppost. If the illumination is red, it means that particular entrance is closed. As well, some entrances are marked "uptown only" or "downtown only" -- so be sure to take notice. Once down at track level, each side (uptown or downtown) generally has a local and express track -- so again, take heed of all the signs above you. System maps are posted in every train car or in the subway station, and free maps are sometimes available at station booths.

7 Best Itineraries for Your First Cruise

best cruise to go on

Well, summer is high season for the international party set here, and a cruise visit will put all of the clubs, bars and -- in the case of Mykonos cruises -- beaches you need to tie one on within an easy walk or cab ride. You'll also have plenty of options for romantic date nights, fresh seafood and boutique shopping. With ships traveling all over the globe, it can be difficult to choose the destination that's right for you, especially when there are so many bucket list-worthy options.

How to choose the right cruise ship cabin

Bathrooms include glass-enclosed showers, anti-fog mirrors and heated floors. This may influence which products we review and write about (and where those products appear on the site), but it in no way affects our recommendations or advice, which are grounded in thousands of hours of research. Our partners cannot pay us to guarantee favorable reviews of their products or services. Select Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) ships regularly play host to current Broadway hits.

Norwegian Cruise Line: Best first cruise for solo cruisers

(It's rare for the Australian market to see brand-new vessels.) Voyages include stops in Hobart, Burnie or both Tasmanian ports. On the two-week sailing, ports also include Sydney, as well as Picton, Napier, Tauranga and Auckland in New Zealand. The second route is an eight-day sailing from Osaka to Fukuoka, May 15-22, 2023, taking passengers to stops in the Seto Inland Sea, the oldest sea route in Japan.

Adventures by Disney

Visit the moving Peace Memorial Park honoring the tragedy of WWII in Hiroshima and historic Hirosaki Castle in Aomori. Don't miss Sakaiminato, famous for its seafood and the Izumo-taisha Grand Shrine. Impact on your credit may vary, as credit scores are independently determined by credit bureaus based on a number of factors including the financial decisions you make with other financial services organizations.

Expedition Cruising With Seabourn

This line hosts LGBTQ+ welcome parties, social hours and other events on almost every cruise, from the Bahamas to the Mediterranean to Australia. You’ll want to book now for the fifth annual Pride Party at Sea, which will held next June. Each ship in the fleet will participate in this vibrant celebration of the LGBTQ+ community—and that, in itself, is worth celebrating.

Princess Cruises

The ship will also visit the UAE's island of Sir Bani Yas, which is known for nature and wildlife conservation. It's no secret that American Queen Voyages has been sailing U.S. rivers for years. But what makes this particular itinerary special is that it will be the line's longest ever.

Cruising offers something for every traveler, allowing you to visit multiple destinations while sleeping in the same bed every night. Whether your next vacation is with your family, your partner or solo, there's a ship that’s right for you. The best cruise lines offer promotions regularly, so keep an eye out for specials that match your budget. Couples looking for the best cruise lines for a romantic adventure should make reservations with Viking Ocean Cruises. All Viking cruise ships are adults-only, so couples can enjoy their trip without interruptions from other travelers' children on board.

Best adults-only Caribbean cruise: Virgin Voyages

It features sun-kissed beaches, secret coves and gin-clear waters in idyllic ports of call like St. Barts, St. Kitts and Nevis, Guadeloupe, Dominica and St. Lucia. However, if an upscale cruise experience is what you seek, Windstar Cruises can deliver. The line's seven-night Classic Caribbean itinerary aboard Wind Surf should be on your radar. Also, you'll usually only see luxury sailings in the Caribbean during the winter months — from December through March. For luxury cruises in the Caribbean, the period between April and October is pretty much a dead zone. Kids receive the royal treatment with high-quality kids clubs and onboard attractions like the 765-foot-long AquaDuck water coaster.

These cruises are a step up from those on mainstream ocean liners, and so tend to cater to a slightly older crowd. They typically boast more sophisticated amenities, too, like art collections and educational classes on sea days. Unfortunately, Virgin Voyages doesn’t offer an alcoholic drinks package like other cruise lines.

Staterooms are also family friendly, with storage that’s designed to accommodate multiple guests. Since you'll be cruising in U.S. territory, you don't have to worry should you need to leave the cruise early and fly back to the states because of illness or a family emergency. This can be a concern for passengers on round-trip, closed-loop sailings from Florida to the Caribbean or Bahamas who board only with a driver's license and birth certificate. When travelers dusted off their bucket list post-pandemic one of the places they most wanted to visit was Antarctica.

The line has a broad range of itineraries that make it easy for solos to explore the globe. Affordable interior-facing cabins and also extravagant suites with butler service? Slated to launch in the spring, the 228-passenger Scenic Eclipse II will visit ports from Dublin to Lisbon, as well as both polar regions, in 2023 and 2024. The innovative vessel, which is similar in design to Scenic Eclipse, will have luxurious suites complete with butler service and all sorts of extras, including helicopters (plural) and a submarine. With a fleet of three ships, Virgin Voyages offers itineraries from two to 14 nights. As for destinations, Virgin has itineraries along the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the South Pacific and even a 14-day transatlantic journey from Barcelona to Miami.

You’ll also find lots of great included dining options, such as Guy’s Burger Joint from Food Network star Guy Fieri. And since you’re saving money on the cruise itself, you may want to consider a meal at specialty restaurants like Emeril’s Bistro 1396 or Rudi’s Seagrill, even though there’s an additional charge. My husband and I scouted out the best cruises for kids when our own children were young, and since becoming empty nesters, we’ve found the best adults-only cruises and couples cruises. Choosing where to go is one of the first steps -- and sometimes trickier than it seems.

They range in capacity from around 2,000 to just over 4,000 passengers on the four newest ships. The butler service onboard, which is available in every suite, is provided by highly-skilled staff trained to help guests with every need, from dinner reservations to shoeshining. Keep in mind that while the butler can arrange for your laundry to be done, there is an extra charge for that. Silversea offers annual world cruises and has a strong presence among the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, as well as seasonal routes in Alaska, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, the South Pacific and Bermuda. Silversea offers door-to-door inclusive fares featuring executive car transfers within 52 miles of your chosen airport, plus flights and hotels as needed.
